By: Shankh Chatterjee There was a time when we all lied on carpenters to get every little piece of furniture for our house. They not only made flawless pieces of carpentry but also installed them in our houses and became exclusive contractors for a specific mansion or area perhaps. Now that the Multi National Corporations have come in, such as Pepperfry, Amazon and Ebay it has deeply affected the work of the lowly carpenters.
Now naturally since we get more variety and all of it ready to ship items, we prefer the MNC’s over the carpenters any day, but what this has done is that the carpenters have lost or have at least taken a huge hit in their business which is their only source of livelihood. There are people who still prefer carpenters because they can get custom products made according to their needs which might not be available in the market or which might be more expensive, but that is a small percentage. Until this percentage increases there is a danger for the carpenters to continue their livelihood. There are a few MNC’s now that are making the effort of including the carpenter’s in the loop of production to provide more employment to the laborers and return them their livelihood. The people are moving to MNC’s everyday and their number keeps increasing, but unfortunately the job’s don’t. The MNC’s at the end of the day are putting the effort but they need to put a larger effort and realize that if they provide more people their livelihood back then they will get to increase their production as well and increase their profits at the end of the day. The MNC’s not only have large profit margins but as the demand is increasing the supply isn’t able to increase because they don’t have enough manpower or means to expand them. Well we all know that it's a big joke that they can’t expand the production, but they don’t want to because they are happy with the profits so far. The carpenters however could use the money and the business. So let us all try to go to the carpenters for the small as well as large things that we can take to them and give them a bit of what they need and deserve and make them a part of this large economy we are all so proud of.
