Commercial Spaces

New technology has affected furniture design. The main reason is the capability of computer programs which has enabled representation of forms which were earlier impossible to draw. Furniture and technology are closely linked. With technological developments, new structures have become available for furniture producers. The question of how new technologies have affected furniture design has numerous different answers which are a lot a single narrative response. Materials and processing ability are synthesised by the craftsperson / designer into furniture. Craftsmen are often defined by their use of technology. Perhaps technology defining practitioners is more related to craftspeople rather than the designer, as designers take an intellectual approach to manufacturing rather than manufacturing the product themselves. Perhaps the technician is now a digital craftsman, interpreting ideas into production. Digital manufacturing has enabled a much closer relationship between the designer and production.
